Innovate Bigger: CALI as Agency of Change in Legal Ed, Access to Justice, Publishing and Beyond

Law schools could be doing so much more.  CALI is a great example of the possibilities that can be grasped by the collective action of law schools to make meaningful changes in legal instruction, access to justice and casebook publication (for example).

Working with 300 different law faculty and law librarians, CALI publishes and maintains over 1000 interactive tutorials.

Working with 40 states and 25 law schools, CALI's A2J Author project has been used to help over 5 million (yes MILLION) self-representing litigants (SRLs) address their own legal problem without a lawyer.

Over 100,000 casebooks and lawbooks have been downloaded from CALI's eLangdell Book Store where all the materials are free and CC-licensed in multiple ebook formats like PDF, Kindle, Ipad, and Microsoft Word saving law students millions of dollars in book costs and enabling remixing and republishing by law faculty.

What else could a collaboration of law schools do?  What are the big issues that CALI and others could tackle with collaboration, tech and smarts?  How else can we be our own agents of innovation?

I will provide some answers and engage the audience in focus-grouping some ideas.  Many will seem unrealistic, but it always seems that way at the start.  If you have ideas, please email me at jmayer@cali.org and I will work them into my talk.
