What's even real? Analyzing what we really know about learning

Speaker 2: Mandy Lee

There are fads, and then there’s what works.  Are “learning styles” real? Is spaced repetition helpful for adult learners?  Does “grit” lead to success?

In this session, we’ll explore current learning theories that are currently popular in higher education and adult learning.  We’ll evaluate how these theories have been assessed in professional literature and in practice. We will describe the current neuroscience discoveries about learning.  Attendees will discuss how to determine which teaching and learning tools will work best for their own organizations, and what theories won’t work for their learners.

Takeaways:

  • Takeaway #1:  Discuss three popular ideas about learning
  • Takeaway #2:  Compare and contrast three current learning studies to determine which are trustworthy and which need more investigation
  • Takeaway #3: Develop rubrics librarians can use for the specific learners in their organizations
